Worked example

Project detail, briefly

AnswerSPEC

“Briefly” changes the expected answer from SPECIFICATION to its familiar four-letter shortening, SPEC.

How to use this in a grid

Match the clue's level of shortening. If the clue contains an abbreviation, the answer often does too.

Common crossword abbreviation signals

Explicit shortening

for short, briefly, and Abbr. directly warn that the fill is shortened.

Shortened clue words

Terms such as org., dept., or an abbreviated title often require an answer at the same level of shortening.

Maps and directions

Compass abbreviations stay symmetrical: the opposite of WSW is ENE, not a spelled-out direction.

Initialisms and acronyms

Organizations, leagues, agencies, and technical parts frequently produce fills such as MLS, NASA, and CPU.

Truncated words

Some fills are conventional shortenings rather than initials, such as SPEC for specification and NATL for national.

Crossings still decide

A short entry is not automatically an abbreviation. Confirm the clue signal and crossing letters before committing.
