Clue-reading guide

What does a question mark mean in a crossword clue?

A question mark often warns that the clue is playful, indirect, or using an unexpected sense.

Signals to notice

  • a final question mark
  • a pun
  • a surprising definition
  • a literal reading that feels wrong
Worked example

Site of a strike?

AnswerALLEY

“Strike” shifts from its everyday senses to bowling, where a strike happens in an alley.

How to use this in a grid

List two or three meanings of the clue's most noticeable noun or verb. The answer often lives in the less obvious one.

What the question mark changes

It permits wordplay

The clue may be a pun or use a less obvious meaning rather than a direct dictionary synonym.

It can make wording literal

“Top three sights in Fiji?” asks you to inspect the written word and notice three dots above letters.

It can hide an identity

“Private sleeping accommodations?” uses private as a military rank, not as a promise of privacy.

It can stretch a category

“Plant food?” treats light as what powers photosynthesis, not as something a plant literally eats.

Grammar still matters

The question mark licenses a playful sense, but answer length, tense, number, and crossings must still fit.

Do not force a joke

Some question-mark clues remain close to ordinary definitions. Use crossings before inventing elaborate wordplay.
